GLENCAIRN MUSEUM AND CATHEDRAL
Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania
Thursday, September 15, 2005
Glencairn Museum educates visitors about the history of religion, using art and artifacts from a variety of cultures and time periods. Religious life through the ages is presented by means of a remarkable collection that illustrates religions as varied as ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek and Roman, medieval Christian, Islamic, Asian, and Native American. The priceless collections of antiquities include 15th century stained glass panels from the Abbey Church outside Paris, 15th century manuscripts, ancient Egyptian bowls and Islamic prayer rugs.
Glencairn was the home of Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn, built in the
Romanesque style between 1928 and 1939. Prior
to this time Raymond Pitcairn, who had no formal training in architecture,
had supervised the erection of the acclaimed
Bryn Athyn Cathedral, a Gothic and Romanesque style complex. Arthur
Kingsley Porter, a noted architectural historian, wrote that the Cathedral
"alone of modern buildings, is worthy of comparison with the best the Middle
Ages produced."
Both Glencairn and the Cathedral were built using methods unusual for the twentieth century. The design of the buildings evolved gradually, relying on scale and full-sized plaster models instead of predetermined architectural plans. Creative input was sought from the craftsmen themselves, who worked together with designers in the shops and studios that were built for them on the site.
Glencairn, above all a home, was also designed to house Pitcairn's outstanding collection of medieval objects, many of which had been purchased as inspirational models for the craftsmen at the Cathedral. Glencairn also became a center where Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn entertained the Bryn Athyn community for musical, civic and social events.

BALTIMORE MUSEUM OF ART
Baltimore, Maryland
MONET'S LONDON: ARTISTS' REFLECTIONS ON THE
THAMES
Thursday, November 3, 2005
This major exhibition of approximately 100 paintings, watercolors and drawings reveals artists' fascination with London at the turn of the 19th century. Breathtaking views of London's misty atmosphere, bustling waterfront, and Victorian architecture are represented in a range of modern styles—Impressionism, pointillism, and fauvism—along with academic, naturalist, and topographic views of the Thames. The highlight is Monet's series of paintings of London's bridges and the monumental Houses of Parliament, considered among his finest examples of Impressionism. Other artists featured are Camille Pissarro, James MacNeill Whistler, Winslow Homer, and photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn. A major catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
Spanning three floors, the BMA's historical building showcases elegant
installations of 18th through 20th century painting and sculpture, decorative
arts including furniture, silver, textiles and folk art and period rooms.
A stroll through these galleries provides a wonderful experience with one
of the finest collections in the country. In addition, don't miss
the Cone Collection, one of the most important art collections in the world.
It includes paintings by Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Renoir.
