7/23/04 ------------------------Creating a linux box w/ practically NO Mac OS install---------------- --by Matt Gillespie Hardware: Power Pc 4400/200 Operating System: Yellow Dog Linux Dayton Necessary Tools: Disk_Tools_PPC.img.bin Apple_CD-ROM_5.4.img.bin Stuffit Expander version 5.5 PowerCD_Setup_1.0.1.sea.bin A copy of the Yellow Dog OS on CD And another mac...ugh. First off, you'll need to create boot disks for Disk Tools and Apple CD-ROM extensions. Next, using another mac, you'll need to pull the ISO9660 extensions from the PowerCD setup binaries and place them on a floppy. Also, create a floppy w/ a copy of Stuffit Expander already unencoded on it. Boot the ppc via the Disk Tools boot disk. Set up a partition of roughly 30 MEG to house your MAC boot partition (Unfortunately on these Old World Mac's you have to have a Mac Partition). Don't worry about setting up your linux partitions yet, you'll do that when you install 'nix. Copy the System folder from the Disk Tools disk to the Mac Partition. (This will allow you to boot off the drive) Now, install the Apple CD-ROM software and Stuffit Expander. For the mac to be able to read non HFS filesystems (mac's native filesystem), we'll need to enable ISO9660 support. To do that, simply copy the ISO9660 extension from the floppy we created earlier, and place it in your System/Extensions folder. Now, reboot the box to enable the extensions... this should allow the minimal mac to read the Yellow Dog installation cd. Insert the Yellow Dog OS cd in the drive. The mac should pick it up without any problems. Open Stuffit Expander, and use it to in-turn open the BootX installer off the cd. Install BootX, and again reboot the box. Unfortunately you need to have the small Mac Boot partition to fire into Linux on these old-world boxen. That does it for the minimal Mac OS install. Directly after the MAC OS welcome screen, the BootX loader will fire up, prompting you to choose which OS you'd like to boot into. (The System Folder will have the ramdisk image you're looking for) Crack openyour Yellowdog install dox to figure out how to install the puppy! (You'll need to use options to pick the ramdisk that will run...just RTFM).
