{"id":2297,"date":"2014-06-03T16:23:13","date_gmt":"2014-06-03T20:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/?p=2297"},"modified":"2014-06-03T16:23:13","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T20:23:13","slug":"the-sunset-on-lambs-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/what\/the-sunset-on-lambs-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sunset on Lambs Gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of months ago, I started to notice a few issues when watching YouTube videos at my home.\u00a0 It seemed that the videos were taking longer to buffer, and a quick check of my <a title=\"The Ubiquiti NanoBridge M5\" href=\"http:\/\/dl.ubnt.com\/nb5_datasheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Ubiquiti NanoBridge M5 (NMB5-25) <\/a>revealed my signal had deteriorated from it&#8217;s usual -64dBm signal to around -75dBm. The Airmax Quality had also significantly tanked, now reading around 40%. An Airview scan didn&#8217;t seem to indicate any new interference:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2306\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2306\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/AirviewBefore.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2306\" src=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/AirviewBefore-300x236.png\" alt=\"Airview Before\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/AirviewBefore-300x236.png 300w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/AirviewBefore-1024x805.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/AirviewBefore-900x708.png 900w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/AirviewBefore.png 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Access Point is in use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Throughput tests to two on-network <a title=\"SpeedTest Mini\" href=\"http:\/\/www.speedtest.net\/mini.php\" target=\"_blank\">Speedtest.net Mini<\/a> sites still showed decent rates, but it became obvious that TCP retransmissions were starting to significantly impact surfing the web. Unfortunately, I didn&#8217;t think to grab a tcpdump to support that theory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2309\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/SpeedtestBefore.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2309\" src=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/SpeedtestBefore-300x86.png\" alt=\"Before Speedtest\" width=\"300\" height=\"86\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/SpeedtestBefore-300x86.png 300w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/SpeedtestBefore.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Decent Throughput it would seem<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I had been holding off installing the new<a title=\"The Ubiquiti NanoBeam M5\" href=\"http:\/\/dl.ubnt.com\/datasheets\/nanobeam\/NanoBeamM_DS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> NanoBeam M5 (NBE-M5-400)<\/a> since I wanted to ensure they were stable. While I&#8217;ve not been burned by the problems with ToughCable or chain burnout problems on the Rocket Titanium M5&#8217;s, I&#8217;ve heard my fair share of grumbling from people that have. On the Ubiquiti forum people have mostly raved about the new units so I figured I&#8217;d see how well it performs.<\/p>\n<p>On the roof of my home, I have a non-penetrating mount atop two anti-fatigue mats purchased from the Home Depot. The mats aren&#8217;t UV rated, something I didn&#8217;t consider until later. After a yearlong installation, the mats are in surprisingly good shape. I don&#8217;t anticipate having to replace them in the next two years based on their current wear.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2299\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/NonPennMount.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2299\" src=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/NonPennMount-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"The Mount.\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/NonPennMount-224x300.jpg 224w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/NonPennMount-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/NonPennMount-900x1200.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/NonPennMount.jpg 1704w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carrying 3 of these up a ladder makes you sleepy&#8230; that&#8217;s why there&#8217;s no fourth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The NanoBridge M5 dish itself was still tightly connected to it&#8217;s mast, and the 3 concrete ballasts holding the mount in place seem to prevent any possible shifting.\u00a0 Initially when my signal deteriorated, I thought a bird may have slammed into the dish or mount and somehow moved it, but I don&#8217;t believe this is the case. Our tower is slightly to the right of the valley.\u00a0 Not particularly liking heights and trying to limit visibility from the street, I opted not to move the mount closer to the front of my home.\u00a0 I may revisit that decision in the future. Before I removed the NanoBridge I did try to correct it&#8217;s position but was only able to receive around an average of -70dBm at best.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2302\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2302\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/nanobridgeafterspeedtest.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2302\" src=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/nanobridgeafterspeedtest-300x258.png\" alt=\"The NanoBridge M5\" width=\"300\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/nanobridgeafterspeedtest-300x258.png 300w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/nanobridgeafterspeedtest.png 829w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is about where my signal settled.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Losing sunlight, I upgraded the dish to the NanoBeam M5. The only thing about the dish I dislike is that it has one U-bolt instead of two. I&#8217;m sure it&#8217;s ample but the NanoBridge&#8217;s 2 U-bolt configuration really seemed to hold it to the pole so that it couldn&#8217;t possibly be knocked out of alignment. My roof is mostly flat with a slight angle, so I wasn&#8217;t able to fully straighten the dish.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2303\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/TheLevel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2303\" src=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/TheLevel-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"The Level\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/TheLevel-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/TheLevel-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/TheLevel-900x675.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Do Not Point the Laser into Someone&#8217;s Eyes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Installing the NanoBeam was quick and easy. The first thing that was obvious was the noise floor had gone from -93dBm to -103dBm. Forgive the ugly colors of the graphs (I plan of making them more visually appealing one day), but as Adam Savage says &#8220;<span class=\"st\">The <em>only difference between screwing around<\/em> and <em>science<\/em> is writing it down<\/span>&#8220;.\u00a0 These graphs display a pretty clean-cut before and after of the upgrade, which took place at about 20:00.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2317\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a upgrade and only noticed the next day (that&#8217;s why this graph is hours after the others).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2322\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2322\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/airmax.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2322\" src=\"http:\/\/www.braindeadprojects.com\/blog\/wp-content\/airmax-300x131.png\" alt=\"Airmax\" width=\"300\" height=\"131\" My initial problems with YouTube buffering have gone away and three days later things are still going strong.
